What is sustainability?
Sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without jeopardising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. It considers the long-term viability of a community, project or practice.
Sustainability is really important to us here at ATHOI and we are passionate about meaningful purchasing that does good. In this blog post we're sharing the sustainability story behind some of the pieces we sell!
One of the reasons we love stocking handmade products from all over the world is the amazing unique materials that the artisans use to make them!
First up are the Origin Studs, Strength Studs and Origin Bangle. These are made using Ugandan Ankole which is a sustainable cow horn by-product. Instead of this being disposed of and going to waste, the artisans use it to create beautiful jewellery for you to wear and love!
Next is the gorgeous paper pulp collection from Southern Africa. The beads on the earrings and the ‘stone’ on the ring are made from waste paper pulp which has been dyed and varnished for durability!
And finally we have the gorgeous Vilma earrings and Rachel necklace - made from tagua nut, which has fallen from trees in the Southern African rainforest. This is also known as ‘vegetable ivory’ because of its natural ivory colour, shiny texture and durability. In 1 year a tagua palm can produce up to 20 lbs of vegetable ivory - the same amount of ivory a female elephant produces in her lifetime!
